OCD is an anxiety disorder that can affect you for your entire life. The symptoms are grouped into two different categories: obsessions and compulsions.
Obsessions are repetitive thought patterns or worries that drive your actions. You can’t reason with your obsessive thoughts, even if they would seem irrational to someone else. While there are countless examples of obsessions from OCD, some common examples are germophobia, fixation with symmetry, and violent thoughts.
Compulsions from OCD are behaviors you perform to ease your obsessions. They’re ritualistic actions that help reduce your anxiety, even if the logic doesn’t make sense to someone else. Some examples are hand washing, organizing or putting things in order, or repeatedly checking that you’ve completed a task like turning off the stove.
At his private practice and with telehealth appointments, Dr. Wilson offers psychotherapy for OCD. He uses evidence-based strategies like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic therapy to examine your way of thinking, increase your understanding of yourself, and help you develop skills to manage your OCD symptoms.
